When he left the RN in 1980 he was the most decorated Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter pilot in peacetime, a record he holds to this day. He was awarded the Air Force Cross by HM The Queen for the SAR rescues he conducted on the infamous Fastnet Yacht Race of 1979 in which 25 yachts were lost.  He was also awarded the Queen’s Commendation for his SAR career.

Since leaving the RN, Jerry has carved out a career becoming the one of the top 5 helicopter film pilots in the world, and the world’s leading aerial film director.

Jerry’s sequel to RESCUE PILOT, “FILM PILOT – FROM JAMES BOND TO HURRICANE KATRINA” was published by Bloomsbury worldwide in March 2017, and tells the behind the scenes stories from the tv and film projects he’s flown on and directed since the 1980s.

The final chapter of FILM PILOT describes the disruption to the helicopter film world that Drones have brought about, as well as posing the theory that the advent of Drones and the innovations they bring to both film and SAR have opened to door to the most exciting aerial innovations and applications since the Wright brothers.

His latest book tells the behind the scenes stories from the television and film projects he’s flown on and directed since the 1980s including being the first man ever to fly through the Petronas Towers in a helicopter, working with Ridley Scott on ‘Black Hawk Down’, Commanding the Airspace and the Helicopter Film Units for the Athens Olympics, Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Doha Asian Games and Soccer World Cup in South Africa, and the Formula 1 Motor Racing Grand Prix from 2010 to 2013.

Jessica Culley

I am not your typical drone flyer….. at the age of 50 and a female, I am definitely in the minority…. but times are changing…. women are embracing this technology at a phenomenal rate!  I have been flying on a daily basis for over 3 years and just love the sense of freedom and relaxation it provides. As a photographer I love the versatility that the drone gives me, and the amazing perspectives available. Unmanned aerial vehicles have opened the door to previously unaccessible sites and views and expanded our outlook on the world.  This competition will show us exactly what these machines can do, in the right hands.

I am now a successful, award winning commercial photographer, specialising in drone photography. Published in DJIs book Above the World.  I have organised International Drone Day South East Queensland for the last 2 years. I am an active member and admin on DJI Owners of Australia Facebook page, with over 10,000 members. Our group encourages new drone owners and promotes good airmanship to keep this hobby safe and improve the general public perception of drones. I have a medical back ground and can see the potential for drones in providing some forms of relief and relaxation for those with chronic incapacitating conditions such as PTSD, depression as well as physical disabilities. I would love to be involved in some of these projects in the future.
